SIMPLE SPINACH, APPLE AND LIME SMOOTHIE

According to Government guidelines, we should be eating in the region of 5 to 7 portions of fruit and vegetables.  Of course, in an ideal world we'd all have a rich tapestry of different coloured vegetables with every meal and we'd be scoffing fruit instead of all the other crap that we eat.

But sometimes real life doesn't work like this. Work interferes with food preparation, convenience food is cheap and readily available, and fruit and vegetables can go off pretty quickly. On those days/weeks/months, it can be difficult to get your micronutrients in. And if you don't get these nutrients in, you'll start to feel run down pretty quickly, especially if you like to exercise on a regular basis. Here's a cheap, simple and convenient smoothie that will give your immune system a good kick start. The key here is: ice! Always make sure that you blend in some ice and serve ice-cold!

You will need:

1 apple (take out the core and eat off the skin)

2 handfuls of spinach (give this a wash first)

Juice of half a lime (reduce this to a quarter if you like)

3 to 4 inches of cucumber (peeled)

Half a cup of water and half a cup of orange juice (you can skip the orange juice if you don't have it)

1 teaspoon of minced ginger (optional)

ICE!

Get it all in the blender and give it a good blending.
